Pressure Independent Control Valves
Siemens Building Technologies Division, the world’s market leader for safe and energy efficient buildings and infrastructures recently announced a Pressure Independent Control Valve (PICV) that integrates three functions in one single device: control valve, adjustable flow limiter, and automatic pressure regulator. The line has been engineered to provide accuracy and flexibility, simplifying the planning, installation, and commissioning of large HVAC system applications. The control accuracy enhances room comfort and prevents the over-supply or under-supply of heating or cooling energy, making it a significant contributor to energy efficiency.
The control valve function is designed for temperature control while the adjustable flow limiter is used for setting the required flow rate. The automatic pressure regulator is designed for balancing pressure fluctuations in the hydronic system. By combining these features, the integrated differential pressure regulator keeps pressure constant across the internal control valve, while also keeping a consistent volumetric flow regardless of pressure fluctuations in the hydronic system. This will allow for a higher level of comfort under all operating conditions and optimizes return temperatures. As a result HVAC equipment can work easier, significantly reducing heating and cooling costs while also generating savings in maintenance and repair.
The company’s PICV portfolio is compromised of 8 different valves covering a flow range of 0.3 GPM to 37 GPM with a differential operating pressure range of 2.3 PSI to 58 PSI. Most competitors products require a minimum of 5 PSI for proper pressure independent operation. By allowing for a lower minimum differential pressure the systems pumps can be turned down more, resulting in less wasted pump energy and thus higher savings.
