Developed by four Turkish university students, Washit is an innovative design that combines a shower and a washing machine in one unit. Winners of the 2012 iF Concept Design Award: Hansgrohe Special Award, the students developed the product with the goal of saving water in mind. They aimed to find a way to decrease excessive water use in the bathroom in a way that would easily fit consumer lifestyles.
The Washit uses a closed plumbing system complete with two water pumps, three filters (carbon, organic, and chemical), UV cleaning phase, heater, and a water storage unit. The idea is that while the consumer is showering the Washit will gather grey water at the bottom of the shower, pass it through the filters and UV cleaning phase, and into the storage unit. This water can then be used for either washing clothes or later showering.
After winning the Concept Design Award, the students have begun developing prototypes of the Washit to be marketed.
