Dye Sensitized PhotovoltaicDye Sensitized Photovoltaic

Dye solar technology is based on artificial photosynthesis. Dye solar cells leapfrog the earlier silicon-based photovoltaic cells because they can produce electricity in low light conditions and overcast days. The dye solar technology also does not require the use of high-priced raw materials, such as silicone, and uses a manufacturing process that does not produce toxic emissions.

Currently, there are several companies trying to commercialize the dye solar cells. These companies include DyeSol Limited, STMicroelectronics, Orionsolar, and Konarka. In March 2005, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Konarka Technologies a $500,000 grant. The goal of this NSF Small Business Innovation Research Phase II project is to raise the performance of the company's dye sensitized solar cell technology.
